           Youth Programs

Spot 5's Studio Youth Classes teach the fundamentals of art and art history in a hands-on environment.  The class calendar is divided into trimesters that roughly follow the JCPS school year. Small class size ensures individual attention. Ongoing enrollment and flexible teaching allows your child to join at any time there is room in the class (unless otherwise noted). There is a liberal make-up policy for missed classes. Special portfolio readiness and review track are offered for interested students.  All materials are included in the cost of tuition.

Concentrating on the use of different materials and processes, this class looks at famous artists' works for inspiration but utilizes the students' own great gifts of childhood imagination. This age group explores drawing with emphasis on skill building, painting in oils and acrylics, working in torn paper, batik, ink, clay and mosaic.  Class projects are designed to introduce the student to the basic elements of design and composition.

Building skills in the areas of life drawing and painting are emphasized at this age level, although students will be exposed to a variety of areas of visual art.  The class often draws from historical art movements for reference, teaching art history in a hands-on way.  While some students enroll for the purpose of putting together a portfolio for school programs, others simply enjoy exploring different styles and materials such as batik, ceramics and pop art.

The youth program at Spot 5 is one of the best private art education programs in the area.  Our classes teach the fundamentals of art and design, allow students to explore a wide variety of materials and techniques, and provide an exposure to art history.  The program sessions roughly track the JCPS school year, however your child may join at any time.  Portfolio development is stressed for those who plan on moving on to competitive primary or secondary visual arts programs.
