Painting/Drawing instructor Laurie Blayney escaped the recent snowstorm and bad winter weather by working in the Bahamas. Laurie taught a week-long workshop on pastels at a studio based in in Lyford Cay - located on New Providence Island. The students worked on a various layering and sketching techniques for still life and landscapes ... and when you have the Caribbean for a landscape, how can you go wrong? Husband / Co-Owner Jeff Freeman went along as assistant to the teacher. Tough gig.
While there they visited the National Gallery which featured Bahamian artist Max Taylor: http://www.nagb.org.bs/
Laurie was not the only one traveling these past couple of weeks. Our elementary class instructor, Jill Morgan, was in New York City to attend an opening |

The summer camp listings are finally posted. The youth summer camp program here at Spot 5 has grown steadily over the last four or five years - and we think this year will be the best roster we have ever offered.
Parents and kids will have over two dozen half day camps to choose from this year for ages 5 - 18. There will be some exciting new subjects, like cartooning and graffiti, as well as some repeats of big hits from last year like digital photography and animal studies.
New this year, we have added morning sessions so that kids and parents have the option of combining camps for a full day of art education and fun. The camps cost $115 for each five day session of half day classes. For more information and a listing of the camp subjects, visit the website at www.spot5artstudio.com and follow the link under the ‘Kids and Teen Classes’ menu - or just follow this link: SUMMER CAMPS! |

Spot 5 has become the adopted home of the Louisville Cartoonists Society, which will meet in the studio on March 1 at 7:30. LCS boasts a blue ribbon group of artists led by local artist and educator Ted Lee Nathanson. The timing is great, because April is gonna be Louisville Comics Month. LCS has published an anthology of work that will be on sale around town - including Clifton Art Supply. |

at Rogue Space Chelsea's Nude Art Group Show (New York, New York.). Jill and her collaborator Joseph Mays submitted three photographic images which manipulate light and black light paint over the nude form.
Their work must have turned some heads, because they were awarded a solo show that will take place at the gallery in June of this year. Their work is also currently being exhibited in the Lexington Art League's Nude 2010 Show.

Spot 5’s ceramics instructor Greg Penner was snatched up by the Speed Museum as its new Education Outreach Coordinator. Greg will be involved in the Speed’s Youth Apprentice Program, working with community arts outreach to schools and youth in the Jefferson County area. Greg will not be leaving us here at Spot 5, however, and he will continue to teach both youth and adults the fine art of ceramics.

online? |

….Almost.
Since December, we’ve been promising to launch Clifton Online - a local answer to the big online warehouse art supply retailers. But so far, all you have seen is promises.
I don’t want to sound like the boy who cried wolf, so here’s the story: We could have gone with a pre-configured website offered by some of our suppliers, and used by some of our competitors.
For an annual fee, they will let a retailer plug in their local logo and information to their catalog. It looks like a local website, but it is not. It is pretty easy, but as a retailer we would be limited to offering what is on their site. We could not offer deals and materials from other sources.
Frankly, that’s not how we envisioned Clifton Online. We wanted to keep an eye out for great deals and interesting |

items and pass those on to our customers. We wanted Clifton Online to be not only a good spot to buy your routine art supply needs, but also a site you could visit for some unusual items and some real bargains.
The cost of that freedom is that we have to design our website and populate it ourselves with our own catalog of art materials. That’s a big job for a small mom & pop store. And we are almost done -- except for a couple of the most complicated categories. Like Paper and Paint.
Unfortunately, it seems rather pointless to open up an online art supply store without paper or paint. So we have been working diligently to get it done - hoping that you folks will appreciate our efforts and will be patient while we make the site the best we can.
New target for launch = March 1.
